Experimental observation of the Thomas peak in electron capture

                        Experimental differential cross sections for electron capture by fast protons in H/sub 2/ and He are presented. The cross sections exhibit clear structures near the Thomas angle of 0.47 mrad signifying double-scattering contributions to the capture process. The agreement between experiment and theory clearly improves when multiple-scattering terms beyond double-scattering is included in the calculations.
