Preliminary report on the geology of the near-surface coal beds in the Knife River area, North Dakota

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6622388
The Knife River Study area covers approximately 1900 mi/sup 2/ (4921 km/sup 2/) in western North Dakota. This report describes the structure and stratigraphy of the Sentinal Butte Member and the HT Butte lignite bed of the Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene). The subsurface data are based om well logs, correlation diagrams, and structure contour and isopach maps of the lignite beds. Stratigraphic locations and names of the lignite beds are shown. As many as 13 lignite beds may occur at any location, as shown on geophysical logs. This report describes only the four most continuous beds. In ascending stratigraphic order these beds are: the HT Butte bed of the Tongue River Member, and the Schoolhouse, Beulah-Zap, and Hazen beds of the Sentinel Butte Member.
