Finds spur activity in Southeast Asia. [Petroleum exploration in Southeast Asia]

Southeast Asia has a hopeful future because of recent offshore discoveries. In many of the countries more money is being put into exploration and development, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Production and reserves are expected to rise dramatically in the mid 1980's. New discoveries include the Titi, Cinta, and Fanda fields of Indonesia, and the E field on the NW Java Sea. The NW Palawan region of the Philippines has had a successful drilling season in 1981, and initial production levels should be high. Malaysia has instituted a new drilling policy to help conserve its 1.8-billion-bbl. reserves, but offshore drilling is hardly affected by it. Thailand's limited supply of gas will not match the demand soon, but new exploration may ease the situation. (JBF)
