As oil tanker traffic increases with increasing demand for oil imports, attention must be paid to the potential impact of oil transport on the marine environment. The bulk of tanker-generated oil in the oceans is produced by operational procedures. Two procedures, Load-on-Top and crude oil washing, that can be used on large tankers to improve significantly the pollution prevention record of the oil industry are described.
