Big Wells field, 75 miles southwest of San Antonio, is producing from a large stratigraphic trap in a San Miguel Sand of the Upper Cretaceous Taylor Formation. Ranging from 5,300 to 5,800 ft in depth, it covers approx. 30,500 acres (25,400 oil, 5,100 gas) in an area 14 miles long and 3 miles wide. Estimated oil in place in 200 MM bbl. Since discovery in Jan. 1969, 210 oil wells on 80-acre spacing and 7 gas-cap wells have been drilled. Interpreted as being deposited as an offshore bar, the San Miguel Sand is very fine grained with average porosity 19%, average permeability 7.46 md, average net pay 12.4 ft, and average water saturation 54.4%. Although parts of Big Wells field have adequate sand conditions to produce commercially, most of the field was made economically producible through the use of the super-frac technique, utilizing large volumes of sand suspended in heavy hot oil. Prior to Big Wells, the San Miguel trend was considered a high risk trend because of tight sand conditions and a history of small fields.
