The long spaced acoustic logging tool

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6620800
A new and unique long spaced acoustic logging tool has been developed. The tool can record superior quality acoustic data by combining advances in transducer and downhole equipment design with a high speed real-time stacker and digitizer at the surface. The high quality data obtained by the system allows easy analysis of the digitally recorded data for extraction of accurate compressional velocities even when unfavorable hole conditions exist. Examples of these conditions include logs run through permafrost and in gas sands. In addition, when the formation shear velocities are greater than fluid compressional velocity, the digitally recorded data can be analyzed to extract shear velocities from the wave train. The long spacings used by this tool allow the shear wave packet to separate from the compressional energy for easy analysis.
