Over the past decade, Americans have spent nearly $200 billion in the war against air pollution. Recent studies show that the air inside homes, schools, and office buildings contain volatile chemicals, gases, smoke, bacteria, and other pollutants, sometimes in high enough concentrations to pose a serious threat to our health. This article addresses indoor air quality, a problem that is receiving more and more attention around the country. Public health concerns suggest that indoor air quality may be one of the most important environmental issues of the next decade. According to some experts, indoor air quality is a by-product of attempts by architects, engineers, and builders to conserve energy by sealing against infiltration and reducing ventilation air rates.
