Title: Anisotropic superconducting and magnetic properties of a single crystal of ErRh/sub 4/B/sub 4/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)

The magnetic response of a single crystal of the tetragonal compound ErRh/sub 4/B/sub 4/ in c-bar (hard) and a-bar (easy) directions is presented. Great differences are found in the magnetic and superconducting behavior between the two crystallographic orientations. This anisotropy naturally separates the bare superconducting properties of ErRh/sub 4/B/sub 4/ from those affected by magnetism. Along the a-bar axis evidence is found for a first-order phase transition at H/sub c/2 for T< or approx. =3 K. Below T/sub c/2 the data reconcile the discrepancy between the measured ferromagnetic moment per erbium atom by neutron scattering and by Moessbauer effect.
