Effect of metalloid substitutions on the magnetic properties of Fe-R-B alloys
Fe-R-B compounds show outstanding hard magnetic properties with coercivities higher than 10 kOe and energy products up to 45 MGOe. These properties are attributed to the anisotropic Fe/sub 14/R/sub 2/B phase. In this study the authors investigate the effect of metalloid substitutions on the magnetic properties of melt-spun Fe/sub 77/R/sub 15/B/sub 8-x/M/sub x/ alloys where % = Nd, Pr, Y, Tb, M = Si, P, C and x = 2 - 6. The Curie temperatures of amorphous and tetragonal Fe/sub 14/R/sub 2/(BM) phases are found to decrease almost linearly with metalloid substitution. The maximum effect has been observed for M = Carbon where the Curie temperature is decreased by about 60/sup 0/C for x = 4. A similar behavior has been observed for the coercivity but in this case the largest decrease has been found when M = Phosphorus. These results will be discussed in relation to magnetic anisotropy and microstructure studies and the magnetic harding behavior will be explained.
