Procedures for the synthesis of complexes of the cis-(Ru(bipy)(PP)X/sub 2/) series (bipy stands for 2,2'-bipyridyl; PP = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane, X = Cl, Br, I, 1/2 CO/sub 3/, CN/sub 3/, NCS, NO/sub 2/, X/sub 2/ = ONONO/sub 2/; PP = cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene, X = Cl, Br, I, 1/2 CO/sub 3/, NO/sub 2/) have been developed, and the complexes have been obtained for the first time. It has been noted that the coordination of a bidentate phosphine ligand occurs only in a cis position to bipyridyl. It has been established that the dihalo complexes undergo rapid solvation in acetonitrile with the formation of halosolvento compounds. The complexes synthesized have been characterized by data from elemental analysis, Ir and /sup 31/P NMR spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. A correlation between the energies of the transitions in the electronic absorption spectra and the stability of the ruthenium(II) complexes toward oxidation has been noted. It has been shown that the chelating phosphine ligands in the bis-chelate complexes considered display strong ..pi..-acceptor properties and stabilize the ruthenium(II) oxidation state.
