Several methods have been used to contain the stabilization of martensite in Cu-Zn-Al alloys. The most interesting finding to date, however, on inhibition of stabilization, has been reported by Duan and Stobbs. These authors have shown that hot rolled Cu-Zn-Al alloys are much less prone to stabilization than step quenched alloys. Lately, efforts are being made to develop shape memory alloys for applications with operating temperatures at around 473 K. Yet, it would be interesting to explore in the wake of Duan and Stobbs' finding on the inhibition of stabilization, whether the usable temperature of these alloys can be raised by appropriate thermomechanical treatments. The alloys used in this investigation had a nominal composition of 76.99% Cu, 14.77% Zn and 8.24% Al (all in at%). The results of transformation cycling the samples rolled at different temperatures and aged subsequently at room temperature are given.
