Reclaiming orphaned lands using a pneumatic backfill process

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6614947
Pneumatic conveyance systems of varying capabilities were used to backfill abandoned coal mines. Results indicate that pneumatic conveyance of backfill materials is a viable method of abandoned mine reclamation. Costs are competitive especially when the alternatives of offsite disposal areas and relocating structures and roadways are considered. Pneumatic stowage can be used to: (1) dispose of toxic, barren coal waste piles, (2) permanently seal mine openings, (3) abate surface subsidence. 3 references, 3 figures, 1 table.
