We analyze the 't Hooft equation for two-dimensional QCD in the limit of large number of colors using the semiclassical approximation. We show that the correct meson energies and wave functions are reproduced both in the light and heavy quark limits. In the limit of large number of colors, N[sup c], 't Hooft [I] has shown that QCD in two dimensions yields a confining spectrum of mesons with an asymptotic structure reminiscent of Regge trajectories. Originally, his analysis was carried out in the light-cone gauge and in the infinite momentum frame. Since then several analyses have been performed using different gauges, extending the results of 't Hooft to scattering amplitudes and form factors.
