This paper examines the role of shearable [delta][prime] precipitates in detail for an Al-2.5Li-2Mg-0.14Zr (Wt.%) alloy and an Al-2Mg alloy. Various characteristics of serrated flow have been investigated in the under-aged condition, which gives fine shearable [delta][prime] precipitates. A comparison of the Al-2.5Li-2Mg-0.14Zr alloy with the Al-2Mg alloy shows that the characteristics of serrated flow are different in two alloys. These differences are attributed to the presence of fine shearable [delta][prime] precipitates in the former alloy. It is concluded that some amount of shearing of [delta][prime] precipitates is required before serrations can appear on the stress-strain curve.
