Photochemistry of high-spin iron(III) complexes of the macrocyclic ligands (15)pydieneN/sub 5/ and (15)pyaneN/sub 5/. An investigation of the charge-transfer processes
The charge-transfer photochemistries of iron(III) complexes of the (15)pydieneN/sub 5/ and (15)pyaneN/sub 5/ ligands were investigated in nonaqueous media. The photochemical reactivity, exhibited by these compounds, can be described as a reduction of the metal center with a concurrent oxidation of axially coordinaed ligands - Cl/sup -/, Br/sup -/, N/sub 3//sup -/, NCS/sup -/, I/sup -/. Intermediates, produced in these reactions, were investigated by flash photolysis and intercepted with appropriate scavengers. Threshold energies for photochemical reactivity obtained for Fe((15)pydieneN/sub 5/)(X)/sub 2//sup +/(X: Cl/sup -/, Br/sup -/, N/sub 3//sup -/, NCS/sup -/) and Fe((15)pyaneN/sub 5/)(X)/sub 2//sup +/(X: Cl/sup -/, Br/sup -/, N/sub 3//sup -/) exhibited a large dependence on both the macrocyclic and the axially coordinated ligands.
