Concentrations of 14 trace elements were determined in 24 Western Canadian coals ranging in rank from lignite through bituminous. All elemental analyses were carried out using emission spectroscopy. Germanium, boron, manganese, lead, tin, beryllium, nobelium, nickel, cadmium, vanadium, copper, silicon, magnesium, zinc were detected in the coal ashes. Germanium concentrations greater than 0.1% were found in some of the coals, and the Ge distribution in all of the coals studied was generally nonuniform and erratic.
