Postirradiation metallurgical techniques to estimate LOFT peak cladding temperatures

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6607643
Techniques using posttest evaluation of zircaloy microstructure and oxidation characteristics are being developed for estimating LOFT (Loss-of-Fluid-Test) zircaloy cladding peak temperatures attained during thermal transients. The posttest measurements will provide a means for comparing uninstrumented and instrumented cladding temperature histories and evaluating the accuracy of cladding surface thermocouples. The state-of-the-art data base for zircaloy microstructures and oxidation kinetics, as two independent techniques to estimate peak cladding temperatures, are reviewed to assess their application for determining temperatures during the LOCEs (Loss-of-Coolant Experiments) in the LOFT facility.
