A review covers LNG properties; metals used in LNG operations at temperatures down to -425/sup 0/F; advantages of LNG for natural gas storage and transport; world-wide imports of LNG to baseload terminals; concerns for public safety and environmental protection, especially the safety of LNG tankers; LNG safety research (behavior of an LNG release, LNG-water interaction, and vapor cloud detonation); avoidance of LNG tank overpressurization caused by liquid rollovers; low probability for tank failure caused by natural occurrences; transport of LNG in ocean tankers, with 42 LNG tankers in service and 29 more under construction; and the evidence of experience that the technology has been demonstrated to be reliable and safe, with no greater risks to personnel, property, and the environment than are presented by other commodities presently moving in commerce.
