A more detailed study was made of the principal products from the degradation of KU-2 X 8 cation exchanger and AV-17 X 8 anion exchanger in water and in ammonia solutions having pH = 9-11 at temperatures of 260-280/sup 0/C. Weighed 1-g samples of swollen ion exchanger separated off by centrifuge were taken in Teflon test tubes having screw caps, 5 ml of water or ammonia solution was poured in, and they were placed in metal holders designed for pressures above 150 bar. To create a counterpressure at the wall of the Teflon test tubes 10 ml of water or aqueous ammonia solution was poured into the metal holders. They were then closed with a tightly fitting cap having a spherical surface and were thermostatted in an air thermostat having a control accuracy of +/-3/sup 0/. After the experiment the pH value of the solution in the Teflon test tube was measured, the resin was washed free of the degradation products, and analyzed according to the schemes described previously. The sulfate ion content was determined by titration with 0.03 N barium chloride solution in the presence of Nitchromazo. It was shown that at 260-280/sup 0/C the contribution of the matrix degradation processes to the decrease in the exchange capacity depends on the type of functional groups, the ionic form, and the nature of the contacting medium.
