Chemical changes in nitrogenous materials during hydrocracking of Athabasca bitumen

The nitrogenous materials in Athabasca bitumen which deactivate catalysts in refining processes were investigated. It was found that the nitrogen content increases in the liquid products of Athabasca bitumen due to non-catalytic thermal hydrocracking. Some amide compounds seem to be generated, but they diminish with severe treatment. Pyrrolic compounds increase, but the 2-quinolones that are present in the bitumen degrade to traces in the highly-cracked product.
