Investigation of corrosion properties and protection for graphite/aluminum, and silicon carbide/aluminum metal matrix composites

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6603917
The corrosion properties of Gr/Al and SiC/Al metal matrix composites (MMCs) and various corrosion protection methods were evaluated in marine environmental exposures of 1 to 42 months. Continuous fiber-reinforced Gr/Al and SiC/Al showed accelerated corrosion when both the Gr or SiC reinforcement and the Al were exposed to the environment, while discontinuous fiber-reinforced SiC/Al MMCs demonstrated localized and less severe corrosion. Aluminum thermal spraying exhibited good corrosion protection for discontinuous fiber-reinforced SiC/Al composites, and sulfuric acid anodizing provided good protection to the continuous fiber-reinforced MMCs. Ion vapor deposited aluminum and organic coatings were also shown to be effective. 9 references.
