Plant modernization for ethane recovery

Conference · · Gas Processors Ass. Reg. Mtg.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6602745
The plants to be considered are plants that were designed for no ethane recovery, or at most a very low percent of the ethane. These plants are usually of 2 major categories: (1) straight refrigeration and (2) refrigerated absorption oil plants. These plants were normally designed for a propane recovery level of from 60 to 85%. A few ambient temperature, steam-stripped, absorption oil plants are still in operation. These plants generally recover a low percentage of propane and consequently absorb very little ethane. It is usually more profitable to replace these plants with some type of cryogenic process than to attempt any revision to the existing process. In addition to the older processes, some cryogenic plants have been constructed on which added expenditure can now be justified to modify for higher ethane recovery. These process schemes are briefly covered, and methods are suggested that should be considered for deeper ethane recovery.
