Title: Oil recovery by steam-driven hydrocarbon slug, in a linear porous medium

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6602342

An experimental study was conducted of the recovery of light and relatively viscous oils (2 to 209 cp) from a porous medium, overlain and underlain by heat-conducting formations, containing a residual oil or connate water saturation, by injection of a small slug (5 to 25% PV) of a light hydrocarbon (0.5 to 73.3 cp), followed by 35.7% PV of steam (333/sup 0/F), driven by a conventional waterflood. A simulation scheme was developed to explain some of the aspects, mainly the steam distillation effect, of the above combination recovery process. Results of the simulation were in a qualitative agreement with the observed behavior. The fluid production histories and the temperature distributions obtained showed that in a straight steam slug displacement, the steam-flood residual oil saturation increases with an increase in the in-place oil viscosity, due to the low efficiency of the preceding waterflood.
