Absorption time of negative K/sup -/ mesons in liquid hydrogen

A measurement of the K/sup -/ meson cascade time in liquid hydrogen is reported which results in a value of less than but approximately equal to 4 x 10/sup -12/ sec. The experimental method consisted in observing the tau decay mode of K/sup -/ mesons in the Saclay 81 cm hydrogen bubble chamber exposed at CERN. The value obtained is found to agree well with the predicted time spent by a K/sup -/ meson to go from a velocity of 0.02c to nuclear capture, assuming the Stark mixing effect. (LEW)
