Calculations for insulated piping systems. [Heat Gain or Loss and Surface Temperature Calculations]
- STV/Seelye Stevenson Value and Knecht, Inc., New York, NY (United States)
Determining heat gain, heat loss, and surface temperature of insulated piping is made easier by using a computer program. Determination of heat gain or loss from an uninsulated pipe is convenient, but it becomes increasingly difficult for an insulated piping system unless a computer is used. Therefore, a computer program in BASIC has been developed to perform iterative calculations. Furthermore, it is important to know the insulation's outer surface temperature for a particular service. For example, for hot pipes, the outer surface temperature should be at or below a predetermined value for personnel and equipment protection; for cold temperature service, insulation outer surface temperature should be above the dew point temperature of the surrounding air to prevent condensation.
