We present a general method for calculating the recombination probability of geminate radicals or ions in the presence of a scavenger. By use of this method the recombination probabilities of geminate radicals in one-, two-, and three-dimensional spaces are analytically calculated as a function of scavenger concentration. The so-called square-root law holds in one- and three- dimensional spaces, but not in a two-dimensional space. The present method is also applied to the recombination probability of geminate ions. The recombination probability of geminate ions in the presence of both a scavenger and an external electric field has been rigorously derived for the first time.
