An experimental investigation was made of the slowing down of a thermal beam of sodium atoms by counterpropagating resonance laser radiation. Direct determination of the distribution of the longitudinal atomic velocities was used to study the velocity monochromatization of the atomic beam. A comparison of the experimental and theoretical results was made. For the effective slowing down length of 20 cm in our experiments the narrowing of the distribution of the longitudinal velocities was nineteen-fold and this corresponded to lowering of the temperature of the relative motion of atoms to 1.5 /sup 0/K.
