Laser synchrotron radiation from beams and plasmas
- Beam Physics Branch, Plasma Physics Division, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375-5320 (United States)
The nonlinear Thomson scattering of intense laser fields from beams and plasmas is analyzed. This theory is valid for laser fields of arbitrary intensities and for electrons of arbitrary energies. The space-charge electrostatic potential is included self-consistently. A laser synchrotron source (LSS), based on nonlinear Thomson scattering, may provide a practical method for generating tunable, near monochromatic, well collimated, short pulse x-rays in a compact, relatively inexpensive source. The LSS is capable of generating ultrashort ([approx lt]1 ps) x-ray pulses with high peak flux ([approx gt]10[sup 21] photons/s) and brightness ([approx gt]10[sup 19] photons/s-mm[sup 2]-mrad[sup 2] 0.1% BW) in the soft and hard x-ray regimes.
