With a view to studying the spatial distribution of the near-IR emission in luminous IRAS galaxies, 47 galaxies with IR luminosities greater than 10 to the 11th solar luminosities have been measured at 1.3, 1.65, and 2.2 microns with beam diameters of 17, 33, and 55 arcsec, and used in conjunction with 5 and 10 arcsec observations. the unusually red near-IR colors are found to be confined to the nuclear regions, while the outer disk regions have near-IR colors appropriate to a normal stellar population. Since most of the IR luminosity is coming from the nuclei, the global near-IR properties of IR luminous galaxies are not good tracers of IR activity. 36 refs.
