Algal biomasses. Final report
In consideration of the possibility of producing energy from algal biomass, experimental results are presented from a study of algae growing naturally in lagoons and coastal ponds in Italian waters. Of the three lagoons considered, the Lagoon of Venice (500 sq km) was chosen for a detailed study, which included the finding of exploitable species, the estimate of their productivity and the location of natural accumulation areas. Suggestions are made for harvesting and storage techniques and for the siting of processing facilities. A preliminary estimate of production costs has shown that they would be comparable with, if not lower than, those for artificial ponds. (Copyright (c) ECSC-EEC-EAEC, Brussels Luxembourg, 1981.)
