All of the 1980 candidates - Democrats Carter, Kennedy, and Brown and Republicans Anderson, Baker, Bush, Connally, and Reagan are rated on the following energy and environment issues: energy conservation; solar and renewable energy sources; nuclear; coal (mining and leasing); synthetic fuels/Energy Security Corp.; Energy Mobilization Board, waiving laws; offshore oil/coastal issues; water projects and development; management of forests, BLM lands; Alaska lands; parks, wilderness, wild rivers; wildlife; agriculture/protection of farm land and flood plains; transportation; resource recovery; air pollution; water pollution/wetlands; toxics, OSHA, pesticides; and population growth. The League used the same grades as on a school report card: A is excellent, F is total failure, with small letters used to indicate votes or more passive positions taken in the campaign or in office. In the overall assessment, Reagan was graded as generally unsympathetic to environmental concerns.
