The influence of environment on release behavior and chemical forms of fission products released under LWR (light water reactor) accident conditions
The objective of this paper is to summerize the release behavior of fission products I, Cs, Rb, Te, Sb, Mo, and Ru which has been observed in 28 fission product release tests, 16 simulant tests, and 19 control tests at ORNL. Emphasis is given to the influence of environment on the forms and behavior. The fission product release tests were conducted with highly irradiated LWR fuel segments which were tested in the temperature range 775 to 2300/sup 0/K under three different atmospheres - PH, S-H-H, and DA. The hydrogen in S-H-H was produced by the reaction of steam with the Zircaloy cladding of the fuel rod segments. The hydrogen concentration depended on rate of steam flow supplied and the temperature of the specimen. For most of these tests, the concentration varied from less than 1% to pure hydrogen. In one of the most recent tests (VI-1), the Zircaloy cladding was completely oxidized during the test and for the latter part of the test the hydrogen pressure was negligible (Osborne, 1986). The three different atmospheres were also used in the control and simulant tests.
