A Lorentz- and gauge-invariant method is developed to treat the structure of composite objects in the process of their photodisintegration. Application of the approach to the photodisintegration of the deuteron gives a unified description of all of the experimental data up to the meson-production threshold without the use of adjustable parameters. Wave functions corresponding to realistic potentials are used. The method can be extended to the resonance-energy region by adding gauge-invariant ''box'' diagrams with nucleon resonances.
