Coherent lasing from the 5s/sup 2/ /sup 2/D/sub 5/2/--5p/sup 2/P/sup 0//sub 3/2/ transition of the CdII ion (lambda = 441.6 nm) been achieved by heating the luster tube to 380 /sup 0/C. Lasing occurred at thermal neutron fluxes exceeding 2.5 10/sup 14//cm/sup 2/s with maximal power roughly-equal50 mW and a pulse duration of 200 ..mu..s. This power was determined by comparison with the known power from a He--Ne laser, taking into account the different spectral sensitivities of the photocathode of the FEU-79 to red and blue light.
