Ionization of one-electron ions penetrating a target at relativistic energies

Journal Article · · Physical Review A

It is argued that the cross section for ionization of a hydrogenlike ion penetrating a target at relativistic speed v={beta}c saturates already at moderate values of {gamma}{equivalent_to}1/{radical} (1{minus}{beta}{sup 2}) . This is at variance with results published previously [R. Anholt and U. Becker, Phys. Rev. A {bold 36}, 4628 (1987)]. A simple model is developed and shown to yield cross sections in accordance with those of the only two experiments performed so far. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
