Synchronously pumped D/sub 2/ gas-in-glass fiber Raman laser operating at 1. 56. mu. m

A synchronously pumped D/sub 2/ gas-in-glass fiber Raman laser operating at 1.56 ..mu..m has been demonstrated. The active medium is molecular D/sub 2/ diffused into a 100-m-long conventional single-mode solid silica optical fiber. Synchronous pumping with a mode-locked 1.06-..mu..m Nd:YAG laser (120-psec pulse width with 1-MHz repetition rate) produces 15-psec pulses at 1.56 ..mu..m with peak output powers of 20 W.
