This paper discusses a program to assess the technical and economic feasibility of the use of shale oil to improve the performance characteristics of asphalt paving materials. In support of this program, the author's company recently completed a total refurbishment of its pilot plant facilities, located near Rifle, Colorado, which facilities were operated in 1988 to produce sufficient shale oil for further research on and field evaluations of shale oil modified asphalts. Additional systems, designed to increase the yield and to enhance the properties of shale oil modified asphalts, also were constructed and operated during the 1988 pilot plant operations. In connection with the shale oil modified asphalt production runs conducted during 1988, further research was conducted on the Paraho direct heated retorting process, with emphasis on optimizing retort performance over a wide range of shale grades and throughput rates. The results from the retort optimization tests, laboratory and engineering evaluations of the properties of shale oil modified asphalts, and the coprocessing of oil shale with spent tires are reviewed.
