An analysis is given of the /sup 48/Ca(p, n)/sup 48/Sc reaction at proton energies E/sub p/ = 134 and 160 MeV, using a microscopic approach that combines the distorted-wave impulse approximation and structural information on charge-exchange excitations from the theory of finite Fermi systems. The angular distributions and the analyzing powers are calculated for the J/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup +/-7/sup +/ states in the (..pi..f/sub 7//sub ///sub 2/, ..nu..f /sup -1//sub 7/2/) multiplet, as are the inclusive neutron spectra and spin polarization transfer coefficients at small angles in the range 0less than or equal to-Q/sub p//sub n/approx. <40 MeV.
