Fission of /sup 235/U by thermal neutrons has been studied. In each fission event semiconductor detectors were used to record two fragments, in coincidence with which four scintillation detectors recorded prompt ..gamma.. rays or fission neutrons identified by time of flight. The intensities of single detections of neutrons and ..gamma.. rays were measured, and also the intensities of detection of neutron--..gamma..-ray pairs and ..gamma..-ray pairs. The results of the measurements agree if one assumes that the spectra and angular distributions of the ..gamma.. rays do not depend on the number of ..gamma.. rays emitted. The standard deviation sigma(..nu../sub ..gamma../) of the number of prompt fission ..gamma.. rays ..nu../sub ..gamma../ from the average value sigma(..nu../sub ..gamma../) = 3.1 +- 0.1 was determined. The correlation coefficient rho/sub n//sub ..gamma../ between the numbers of prompt neutrons and ..gamma.. rays from fission was determined: rho/sub n//sub ..gamma../ = -0.32 +- 0.02. The data obtained are discussed from the point of view of fluctuations of the parameters which characterize fission at the scission point.
