Preparation and Moessbauer spectra of neptunium(III)-alkali metal-chloro compounds

The preparation of Np(III)-chloro compounds of the composition M/sub 2/NpC1/sub 5/ and NpC1/sub 3/.4CH/sub 3/CN by the reduction of a 50:1 acetonitrile-propionic acid solution of MC1 where M = K, NH/sub 4/, or Rb and NpCl/sub 4/ with zinc amalgam is described. The Moessbauer spectra of preparations analyzed as MNpC1/sub 4/.XCH/sub 3/CN where X = 1,2 could be reproduced by the spectra of a mixture of M/sub 2/NpC1/sub 5/ and NpC1/sub 3/.4CH/sub 3/CN indicating that the preparations could be presumed to be mixtures.
