Emittance and brightness of electron beams in linear accelerators

In connection with the development of linear electron accelerators (LEA) with high precision parameters for electron microscopy, technological applications, and fundamental research, it is useful to investigate the capability of these accelerators to form beams with the least possible emittance. The present paper analyzes the observed values of emittance and brightness for several dozen LEAs, as well as of the factors that cause a deterioration of those parameters in the process of beam acceleration.
