A discussion of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) ''Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49'', for small- and large-scale shipments covers the classification of hazardous materials, including flammable gases and liquids; the marking and labeling requirements; the necessary documentation; regulations required by the mode of transportation and the applicable regulations beyond Title 49, such as those of IMCO, for water transportation; restrictions to ensure safety during transport and storage; and the requirement for filing certain incident reports to assist DOT in evaluating the restrictions.
