Method and apparatus for storage of gaseous substances in an underground aquifer

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6582644
In a method of storing natural gas in an underground aquifer or water-bearing strata, a well is drilled through a caprock stratum having a permeability of less than 0.001 md and into a formation having porosity of 10 - 30%. Water is pumped from the lower section while gas is pumped into the upper section of the aquifer. The water is removed from the lower portion of the aquifer at a rate corresponding to the flow of water in the stratum toward the borehole. Gas is introduced to empty water from a gas-storage volume in the upper portion of the stratum to receive the injected gas. (16 claims)
