Experiments for determining the yield of oxygen from dilute aqueous solutions of ferrous ion with and without added cupric ion following irradiation with heavy ions are described. It is postulated that molecular oxygen is the precursor of the hydroperoxyl radical, HO/sub 2/, which is formed in reactions which take place in the core of the track. Calculations taking account of the diffusion of the species initially formed in the track core are presented to test this proposal.
