Direct electron-pair production in. pi. /sup + -/p interactions at 18 GeV/c

With use of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center hybride facility 1-m bubble chamber fitted with tantalum plates, a measurement was made of direct unexplained e/sup +/e/sup -/ pair production in 18-GeV/c ..pi../sup + -/p interactions. Limits are set in ..pi../sup +/p processes. In ..pi../sup -/p a signal is observed which cannot be caused by eta, ..omega.., or rho decay, and for masses > m/sub ..pi../0, e/sup + -/ /..pi../sup + -/ = (0.87 +- 0.25) x 10/sup -4/. Some properties of the events are discussed.
