The reduction of sulfur dioxide to sulfur by carbon monoxide on commercially available ICI 46-2, ICI 46-4, and ICI G56 nickel-alumina catalysts and a specially prepared nickel-alumina catalyst was carried out in a tubular flow reactor with the 20 mm catalytic bed maintained at isothermal conditions. The specially prepared catalyst was the most active with an activation energy of about 37 kcal. ICI 46-2 was relatively more active and selective with respect to the formation of carbonyl sulfide, an undesirable toxic by-product, than the other commercial catalysts. The activation energy of the reaction on these catalysts was 40-80 kcal. The approximate order of the reaction with respect to sulfur dioxide concentration was two-thirds, and the data were fitted with an approximate, empirical rate equation. The catalytic reaction apparently involves an induction period.
