The peculiar velocity induced on the local group by the gravitational field of density fluctuations in the galaxy distribution is calculated. The present paper extends the earlier work of Davis and Huchra (1982) using a sample which includes the northern and southern Galactic caps. This allows an improved determination of the mean density of galaxies, avoiding the large concentration of objects associated with the Virgo cluster. It is found that the dominant contribution of the southern Galactic cap to the peculiar acceleration arises from low-density regions, producing a net motion toward the northern hemisphere. This effect is even stronger at larger distances, because of a large void at 6000 km/s. 32 refs.
