Energy supplies and energy demand are projected for the nation and the region. Siting constraints for fossil-fuel power plants and coal conversion plants are discussed. Resources of coal and water are evaluated. The environmental impacts of increased usage of coal are discussed (effects on air and water quality, effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, possible hazards of trace elements). Finally, social and economic impacts and health hazards are considered. (LTN)
