The performance of LSODE, a widely used code for solving stiff systems of ordinary differential equations, has been improved by using strategies that reduce the need to evaluate Jacobians. Two such strategies are examined, and each has been implemented in LSODE. Numerical experiments show that the modified versions of LSODE outperform a standard library version on a variety of difficult stiff test problems.
