A generalization of the Johnson-Sudarshan results concerning the commutation relations of a field with secondary constraints is presented, establishing the connection with the classical theory. A criterion for the relativistic content of the theory is given in terms of a characteristic determinant, which is calculated for the interaction between the Rarita-Schwinger, Dirac, and scalar fields.
